Hannah and Daphneé were completing so many jigsaws that it was becoming clear that neither of them had the most ideal puzzle board. And after seeing so many customers having to do puzzles on carpets or pieces of cardboard as they didn't have any other movable platform to do their puzzles on they wanted to find a solution. They reached out to Alison about designing a puzzle board with them back in February and it's only taken seven months to get this collaboration off the ground!
The puzzle boards, launching on the Sunday 12th of September, have been passionately designed, prototyped and handmade in London. The large board fits a 1,000 piece jigsaw puzzle and the two trays fit snuggly in the space between the board and lid. We felt it was important to have a lid which allowed the board to be stored without the worry of dirt, spillage or anything else damaging the piece.
We wanted to give a little insight into Alison's world of woodworking.
How did you get into woodworking?
I was always passionate about home décor and design, starting with upcycling wooden furniture to slowly creating our own furniture when my husband and I bought our first home. We were so excited with the idea of continuing making our own things, that we basically started replacing shopping & buying with designing & making.
How did you learn the skills?
My mother taught me how to upcycle things and revamp our home without the help of professionals from a very young age so the mindset was always there. Over the past few years, my husband and I got involved in diverse projects in a digital fabrication workshop owned by his friends. This is where we had the opportunity to learn properly on top of watching tutorials and taking short courses.
Where does your inspiration come from when creating/ building something?
Creating and making things either comes from my passion for arts & crafts (exploring ideas on Pinterest or Instagram) or simply from my obsession with solving problems haha.
What's your favourite Pieces Of The Puzzle design?
It fits perfectly in our home as I had recently painted cactus in our bedroom wall. I hadn't made puzzles for years as I never necessarily found any I liked until I got to know Pieces! I didn't remember the benefits of making them either so really glad Pieces came to life.
What do you do when you want to be mindful?
You'll either find me reorganising stuff up, doing arts & crafts, playing cards & games or doing yoga, tai chi or trapeze. These all help me to escape, recharge and focus on one thing at a time.
What's been your favourite project to work on?
My Chess & Backgammon board! We couldn't find a board that combined both and that would look cool in our home so I decided to make it. It took me ages as it required a lot of precision and patience but the outcome was worth the effort. I never thought I'd make one to be honest so it really pushed me to want to do more. It also gave me the opportunity to work on this great new project with Pieces so it's something I feel particularly proud of.
